Send Large Files with DropSend

March 11th, 2009

Have you ever wanted/needed to send large files via email but never have been able to due to file size restrictions on the sender/receivers mail server? Not only are there file size restrictions but there can be a hefty wait time in sending large emails.

I recently found myself needing to email large media files that were only stored locally to family who were 400 miles away. While there are many techniques in sharing media (i.e. flickr, vimeo, imeem), I started to think about ways to send these files as an email instead of sharing them and then sending a link to the content on the shared site. This is when I came across DropSend.

DropSend allows for the users to send large files, up to 1GB. The process works like this:

  1.  Sign up (it’s FREE for the basic accout)
  2.  Select “Send a File”
  3.  Add the recipients email address
  4.  Choose file
  5.  Send

The file then gets uploaded to DropSend’s servers and emails your recipients that you have sent them a file and it is ready for download. After your recipient opens the file for download you are sent a follow-up email that details that your file has been received by your recipient.

The beauty of DropSend is that you bypass the restrictions of email size but you force your recipients to take an unfamiliar extra step in retrieving the media sent. There are more benefits that DropSend offers such as 250MB of online storage FREE of charge, with the basic account, and the ability to encrypt the files sent with a paid subscription.
